Analytical department

The Analytics division of RMI performs analytical test method on raw materials and coatings, e.g. paints, plasters, lacquers, varnishes, structural protection products and External Thermal Insulation Composite System. The test methods comprise determining and assessing materials, their composition and their environmental properties.

To our customers, we offer a range of tests using various analytical methods  within the world of coatings. An overview of our test methods can be found in the directory services.

  • Thermodesorption gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (TDS/GC/MS)
  • Pyrolysis gas chromatography
  • High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection (HPLC/DAD)
  • High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC/MS/MS)
  • Ion chromatography
  • Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy
  • Microscopy
  • UV/VIS photometry
  • Karl Fischer coulometry
  • X-ray fluorescence analysis/RFA
  • Leaching test
  • Thermogravimetry (TGA/DSC)

The analytical department of RMI is accredited according to DIN EN ISO 17025 for the following test methods:

  • Determination of the solids content
  • Determination of the water of crystallisation, loss on ignition and ash content
  • FTIR spectroscopy of raw materials and coating materials
  • Determination of VOC content according to ISO 17895 (headspace GC)
  • Determination of VOC content according to ISO 11890-2 (liquid injection/GC with FID and/or MSD)
  • Determination of SVOC content according to ISO 11890-2 (liquid injection/GC with FID and/or MSD)
  • Emission measurements on coating materials - test chamber method according to EN 16516 and EN 16402
  • Determination of the formaldehyde content of coating materials and raw materials according to VdL-RL 03 (free formaldehyde and total formaldehyde)
  • HPLC determination of isothiazolinones in coating materials and raw materials
  • Microscopic examination of coating samples
  • Determination of the flash point of coating materials and raw materials according to Abel (DIN EN ISO 1523 & DIN EN ISO 13736)
