Acoustic colours alone have no effect

In today's architecture, large, smooth wall and ceiling surfaces are the preferred design. This often leads to unfavourable room acoustics. To optimise these, additional measures are usually necessary. The use of acoustically effective paint would be obvious and practical here, since the surface is visually designed with paint anyway. But is this possible at all?
